Climate Initiative launched in Ireland

Ireland launched the third year of the programme by giving students from St. Clare’s Primary School in Harold’s Cross, Dublin the opportunity to take part in a Video Conference hosted by HSBC along with schools that were also working on their Climate Change theme from Waukegan, Chicago and Buffalo, New York.

St. Clare Primary School has been working on the Green-Schools programme for more than 13 years, achieving their first flag for the Litter and Waste theme in March 1999. Since then they have renewed their flag under the themes of Energy, Water, Transport and Green Home. They began work on the HSBC Climate Change Initiative in September of last year. The school and its Green-Schools committee were excited by the invitation to join the video conference which was hosted in Ireland by HSBC Ireland in their offices on Grand Canal Square.

Students arrived at HSBC Ireland office on Grand Canal Dock and were given an opportunity to note the recycling measures, sensor lighting and many of the green practises in place in HSBC Ireland’s office before the video conference began. After opening introductions from staff and students on all sides, St. Clare’s P.S. Green-School Committee gave a report on all the actions and targets achieved, awards received and obstacles that had occurred since they began working on the programme.  Some of the achievements made by St Clare Primary School that were discussed during the video conference were, the reduction of landfill waste by 50% in the school in their first 2 years of their Green Schools programme, a 30% reduction in energy consumption, fitting toilets with dual flush to reduce water consumption and creating a sensory flowerbed and butter garden on the school grounds. Well done to St Clare Primary School on all the work they have carried out with their Green-Schools programme over the past 10 years!
